What are the different ceremonies in Agile?
In Agile methodologies, ceremonies are regular, scheduled events that provide an opportunity for the team to collaborate, inspect and adapt their work. The most common Agile ceremonies include:
Sprint Planning:
- Purpose: Plan the work to be done in the upcoming sprint.
- Participants: Scrum Master, Product Owner, and the entire development team.
Daily Stand-up (Daily Scrum):
- Purpose: Share updates on progress, discuss any impediments, and plan for the day.
- Participants: Scrum Master, Product Owner (optional), and the entire development team.
Sprint Review:
- Purpose: Demonstrate the work completed during the sprint and gather feedback.
- Participants: Scrum Master, Product Owner, development team, stakeholders, and anyone else interested.
Sprint Retrospective:
- Purpose: Reflect on the past sprint, discuss what went well and what could be improved.
- Participants: Scrum Master, Product Owner, and the entire development team.
Backlog Refinement (Grooming):
- Purpose: Review and update the product backlog, add details, and prioritize upcoming work.
- Participants: Scrum Master, Product Owner, and relevant team members.
These ceremonies are associated with Scrum, one of the most widely used Agile frameworks. Other Agile methodologies, such as Kanban, may not follow the exact same ceremonies but still emphasize regular collaboration and continuous improvement. Additionally, some teams practicing Agile at scale (e.g., in Large Scale Scrum or SAFe) may have additional ceremonies to facilitate coordination across multiple teams.
